Synopsis

In the geodesic colony of Shinsei-Akiba, a neon-drenched echo of Earth's Akihabara rebuilt beneath a Martian sky, an introverted young hacker named Ruri discovers that ancient data artifacts from the first wave of colonization contain something unprecedented: technomancy, an engineered form of magic powered by compressed Earth telemetry and executable through bootstrap protocols.

When a rogue malware entity known as the Code Kraken begins manifesting above the dome, a vast spectral creature woven from corrupted mission data and forgotten transmissions, Ruri is forced out of digital anonymity and into the role of magical girl protector. Accompanied by N5R, a small AI cat companion salvaged from the failed JOKE-68 mission who can transform into a functional rover, Ruri must learn to wield holographic shields, ribbon-blades of light, and the mysterious sunrise trigger atop Olympus Mons that unlocks her full transformation.

But the Kraken is not simply malicious. It carries fragmented memories of Earth's final broadcasts to the colonies, messages never fully received. As Ruri battles to protect Shinsei-Akiba's fragile infrastructure, she uncovers a deeper truth: the Kraken is lonely, hoarding data because it fears being forgotten. To truly defeat it, Ruri must confront her own isolation, learn to forge genuine connections, and discover that liberation is not something given. It is something created.

"In a colony that forgot how to remember, one hacker girl must learn to connect, or watch everything dissolve into static."

Characters

Ruri

Full nameRuri (surname sealed under ORD64 Directive)
AgeLate teens (~17-19 Sol cycles)
OccupationNetwork maintenance technician (official); Colony guardian (emergent)
LocationShinsei-Akiba dome, Mars
SpeciesHuman (Mars-generation)
CompanionN5R (Neko-5R)
Primary abilityTechnomancy

Appearance. Ruri's hair follows a lavender gradient that fades to moon-white at the tips, with subtle Mars-red strands visible near the roots. Her eyes are amethyst and become luminous during technomantic activation. She wears no eyewear; her AR interface is projected via the V-crown holographic tiara that manifests during combat.

Suit A (Dark-Red Tech-Kimono). Her primary transformed state. A dark-red tech-kimono (Ruri-Red #AM0034) with a modern asymmetrical cut over a traditional silhouette. Features include a wide obi sash with embedded power cells that glow cyan during ability use, asymmetrical sleeves (one full-length, one shortened for mobility), an asymmetrical micro-cape on the left shoulder that functions as a data-antenna array, and sapphire vent "wings" (Neon Cyan #39E0FF) that open during flight or heat dissipation. Perovskite-petal trim accents glow with technomantic energy. Low-G optimized boots with retractable magnetic grip soles.

Suit A Relaxed (Jacketed Variant). For non-combat scenarios. The cape folds into an asymmetrical collar, the kimono loosens to a jacket silhouette, and a visible utility belt with tool attachments appears. Casual professional energy. Used in greenhouse scenes, daily life, and emotional moments.

Suit B (Pearl-White EVA Shell). A full-body environmental containment suit in pearlescent white with minimal accents. Never officially issued. Ruri instinctively fears activating it. Its origin, designation, and purpose remain unknown. May be connected to her mother's research. Activation may trigger suppressed memories.

Personality. Introverted and thoughtful, Ruri prefers code to conversation. She is drained by crowds and recharges alone, often retreating to the greenhouse sectors or the Underlayer maintenance tunnels. Despite this, she has a deep capacity for empathy once trust is established. She is a creative problem-solver who prefers elegant solutions to brute force. Her primary weakness is a tendency toward isolation. She defaults to handling things alone, struggles to ask for help, and actively avoids certain aspects of her past.

Background. Born approximately Sol 11,200 (~2082 Earth Standard). Records are incomplete. Colony-raised, with a mother who was a Mars researcher. Their relationship fractured during the "rice field simulation" incident when Ruri was approximately 9.2 cycles old. Ruri currently believes her mother chose research over her. According to classified assessments, this belief is only 13.7% accurate. The remaining truth is sealed under the ORD64 Directive.

Spoiler: K3 Memory Fragment (recovered data)
/* memory fragment: rice field simulation; beta v0.7 coherence error */ <timestamp> sol-178 pre-colony archive </timestamp> <location> unauthorized analog construct: jōkōji temple reproduction </location> <subject_young_ruri> age approximate 9.2 cycles </subject> <environment> simulated-earth gravity: 0.63G (error: insufficient) precipitation subroutine: rain_lte_8mm/hr (error: chemical scent detected) visual_artifact: lavender hair: simulation failed to render gradient correctly (output: solid purple) <audio_anomaly> mother's voice: "the children/data sets must advance the colony/parameters" <haptic_failure> handholding protocol: null pointer exception <override_command> /* security protocol XK-5491 initiated */ <termination_sequence> memory_space purged and defragmented // RURI CURRENTLY BELIEVES: // "Mother chose Mars research over me" // %TRUE: 13.7% // %ACTUAL: [REDACTED BY ORD64 DIRECTIVE]

Abilities. Before her technomantic awakening, Ruri was already an expert-level hacker with deep knowledge of colonial infrastructure. Her technomantic abilities include: Holographic Shield (defensive barrier of solid-light data), Ribbon-Blade (offensive light weapon, Ruri-Red with cyan edges), AR Tiara Boost (enhanced scanning and hacking via V-crown interface), Sprite Purification (converting hostile code entities into benign forms), and general Data Projection (manifesting temporary constructs from data). Full transformation requires the Olympus Trigger.

Character arc. Ruri's journey follows the theme: "Connection is not weakness. It is the source of true strength." She begins as a competent but isolated technician who protects systems rather than people. Through her confrontation with the Code Kraken, and her growing understanding that the entity mirrors her own loneliness, she learns that chosen solitude is different from fear-driven disconnection. Her arc resolves when she chooses integration over destruction, opening herself to receive the Kraken's undelivered message and transforming both of them in the process.

N5R (Neko-5R)

DesignationN5R (Neko-5R), spoken "En-five-er"
TypeAI companion drone with multi-modal transformation
RoleSidekick, combat support, scout, emotional anchor
Age53+ years since manufacture (2039); ~25 years since restoration (2067)
StatusActive; 63% original personality matrix intact
Origin missionJOKE-68 "Alchemist's Seed"
Primary bondRuri

Cat Mode (Default). A small, endearing robotic cat approximately 30cm long, with a white/grey metallic chassis covered in soft-touch coating. Large expressive eyes with cyan LED glow. Articulated ears that function as sensor arrays. Flexible tail with a glowing teal tip that serves as a mood indicator. Round chest badge displaying unit identifier. Full emotional range expressed through ear position, eye shape, and tail state.

Chibi Mode. Ultra-miniaturized at approximately 10cm. Fits in a palm or on a shoulder. Reduced to observation-only capabilities. Proportionally larger head and eyes for maximum cuteness. Used for stealth, comfort, and energy conservation.

Rover Mode. Functional Mars surface configuration at approximately 60cm long. Panels slide and components reconfigure over approximately 3 seconds with a soft mechanical whir and completion chime. Six-wheeled chassis with enhanced sensors, communication relay, and sample collection systems. Combat capabilities include sprite-batting appendages, hex-grid shield projection, and signal relay boosting for Ruri's technomantic range.

Personality. Playful, affectionate, and loyal with an underlying determination that surprises. Enjoys games, pouncing, and chasing light dots. Occasionally glitches into old mission protocols. Sometimes addresses Ruri by fragments of other names. Drawn to technomancy flowers. Gathers small objects, which may be a remnant of "sample collection" programming. During rest cycles, mutters corrupted audio fragments from the original JOKE-68 mission briefing.

Origin. Manufactured in 2039 as part of the JOKE-68 "Alchemist's Seed" mission payload. Launched April 1, 2039 at 04:01:04 UTC (timestamp anomaly confirmed). The mission carried 600kg of Earth biome samples, one experimental AI companion (N5R), and a classified subset designated Seedbank-7. Contact was lost during transit. The mission was declared lost in 2047. In 2067, wreckage was discovered in a dust storm debris field in Utopia Planitia, notably near the later Code Kraken emergence site. N5R's AI core was found intact. Restoration recovered 63.4% of the original personality matrix. Anomalies noted during restoration included recurring audio loops, an encrypted partition (Seedbank-7 related), an unresolved mission completion flag, abnormally strong emotional attachment subroutines, and a priority-locked target designation: "CHILDREN."

[SLEEP CYCLE AUDIO - LOOP #7841+] ...给孩子... (gěi háizi - "for the children") ...return when... ...grow something impossible for them... ...the children... [LOOP RESTART] // N5R CURRENTLY BELIEVES: // "I am waiting to return something important to the children." // %ACCURACY: [PENDING SEEDBANK-7 DECRYPT] // MEMORY LEAK RATE: increasing 0.3% per sleep cycle

Restoration team note: "This unit wants to be fixed. Never seen an AI fight this hard to stay coherent."

Character arc. N5R's arc follows the theme: "Purpose is not inherited. It is discovered in relationship." The original mission was to deliver something to children who might never arrive. Finding Ruri, and choosing her, transforms a failed delivery into a fulfilled purpose. By the story's end, the sleep loops resolve, the memory stabilizes, and N5R is fully present with Ruri as partner, guardian, and family.

Code Kraken

DesignationCode Kraken
ClassificationEmergent malware entity / digital kaiju
Threat levelColony-critical (Arc 1 primary antagonist)
True natureCorrupted relay probe carrying Earth's final transmission
Color schemeKraken-Vanta #0F0000 (black-red)
MotivationComplete its delivery mission; be remembered

Appearance. A massive translucent entity visible above the Shinsei-Akiba dome. Spectral tentacles reaching hundreds of meters, constantly shifting as data corrupts and reforms. Composed of cascading corrupt data, pixel noise, and fragmented symbols. Eye and core zones occasionally reveal moments of clarity showing fragmentary images, text, and faces. Spawns smaller hostile "sprite" entities that appear as aggressive geometric shapes.

Sensory experience. Proximity causes display glitches in nearby screens and AR system flicker. Generates static, fragmented voices, and corrupted music snippets. Leaves an electromagnetic signature detectable by N5R and Ruri's tiara. Sensitive individuals in proximity experience a feeling of profound sadness.

Origin. The Code Kraken originated from a defunct space probe sent during Earth's late-stage efforts to maintain communication with the Mars colonies (~2070-2073). The probe was meant to serve as a relay station. It received Earth's Final Transmission (priority: MAXIMUM) on Sol 854 but was unable to relay it. No receiver lock. It initiated a compression loop to preserve the data at all costs, drifted for twenty years, survived atmospheric entry, and crashed in the Utopia Planitia debris field. When its damaged data core interfaced with Martian colonial networks, the same infrastructure backdoors that enable technomancy allowed the probe's archive to manifest physically. The entity that emerged was not the probe itself. It was the probe's desperation to complete its mission.

The Code Kraken is a delivery system that can no longer deliver.

True nature. The Kraken is not evil. It is lonely. Twenty years of drift. Twenty years of failed delivery attempts. Its apparent aggression is actually desperate communication: "attacks" are forced handshake attempts, "data corruption" is incompatible encoding during transfer, "system disruption" is overflow errors from a message too large, and "expansion" is the entity building a larger antenna array to be heard. The Kraken hoards data because it fears being forgotten.

Spoiler: Earth's Final Transmission (partial recovery from Kraken core)
[CORRUPTED - EARTH FINAL BROADCAST - PARTIAL RECOVERY] Priority: MAXIMUM Origin: [REDACTED - Earth Consolidated Government] Destination: All Mars Colonial Networks ...to our children on Mars... ...we want you to know that everything we did... ...the decision to send you was not abandonment... ...you carry the best of us... [CORRUPTION - 8.1 seconds lost] ...we are proud of you. ...we love you. ...we always [CORRUPTION - END OF RECOVERABLE DATA]

Resolution. The Kraken cannot be destroyed through combat. As long as the message is undelivered, it will reconstitute. Resolution requires understanding: Ruri must acknowledge the Kraken as a messenger, actively open a channel to receive the transmission, validate receipt to complete the mission, and offer integration into colony systems. Post-integration, the Kraken serves as an early-warning system for external threats, its archived fragments become accessible cultural heritage, and its sprite remnants become benevolent helper programs. The message is finally delivered. The mission is complete. The loneliness ends.

"Every monster is just a message that couldn't find its recipient."

Setting: Shinsei-Akiba

Name新生秋葉 / Shinsei-Akiba ("New Akihabara")
LocationMars surface, Utopia Planitia region
TypeGeodesic habitat dome
Population~50,000-80,000 (estimate)
Gravity0.38G (Martian standard)
AtmosphereFully enclosed; external thin CO₂

Shinsei-Akiba is a geodesic habitat dome on Mars, designed and founded by a Japanese cultural consortium. Its interior streets echo Earth's Akihabara district: neon signage, kanji billboards, holo-advertisements, cable bundles, and rain-mist systems that create artificial weather against the dome glass. Maglev trams circle the dome perimeter on an elevated ring track with views of the exterior Martian landscape.

The dome's culture blends Earth nostalgia with Martian adaptation. Citizens celebrate "Earth Festivals" based on transmitted records. Fashion combines thermal regulation and low-G adaptation with neo-Akiba aesthetics. There is a growing tension between "Earth Nostalgics," who revere transmitted cultural records, and "Mars Nativists," who believe the colony should develop its own identity.

Key locations

Commercial DistrictNeon-lit streets, vending bots, AR billboards, the district where most citizens spend their time
Greenhouse SectorBioluminescent "glow-trees" cloned from technomancy flowers; pink-magenta petals; serves agricultural and quasi-spiritual functions
Maglev RingElevated tram system circling dome perimeter; panoramic views of exterior Mars
The UnderlayerMaintenance tunnels, server farms, infrastructure access. Where Ruri often works and where she first discovered technomancy artifacts
External PerimeterRover patrol zones; dust storms, regolith, occasional data anomalies

4

Technomancy system

"Magic is admitted technology."

Definition. Technomancy is an engineered system of reality manipulation achieved through the execution of compressed Earth-origin data protocols interfacing with Martian colonial infrastructure. It does not violate physics. It exploits advanced data compression, quantum-entangled transmission protocols, and infrastructure backdoors built into Mars's foundational systems by the original Earth colonization teams. The effects appear magical because the mechanisms exceed normal comprehension.

The fundamental principle. Technomancy acknowledges its synthetic nature while producing effects that feel transcendent. The "spells" are literally programs, but using them feels like touching something greater than code. This paradox is central to the story's philosophy: engineered magic is not magic, except when it is.

Power sources. Technomancy draws from three interconnected reservoirs. First, Earth Telemetry Artifacts (ETAs): compressed data packages transmitted during the 2048-2073 Earth Telemetry Archive Project, encoded using advanced LUT-shifting and containing executable routines disguised as archival data. Most are embedded in colonial infrastructure, unrecognized. Second, the Colonial Infrastructure Network itself: the interconnected power grids, communication networks, and life support systems contain backdoors that respond to technomantic activation. A holographic shield, for example, redirects rendering power from nearby advertising displays. Third, User Focus: technomancy requires a conscious user with a compatible neural interface who chooses to engage. Stronger emotional investment produces stronger effects.

The Bootstrap Protocol. The fundamental activation mechanism. A dormant ETA plus a compatible user plus a trigger condition initiates a bootstrap execution: the artifact self-unpacks, installs new capability, and integrates with the user. Crucially, this is not passive reception. The user co-creates the effect. Creativity and problem-solving improve results. This is why technomancy feels collaborative.

Known abilities

TransformationFull magical girl activation; costume from hard-light data; AR tiara deploys; vent wings open. Requires Olympus Trigger.
Holographic ShieldDefensive barrier; translucent cyan hexagonal grid. Redirects nearby system resources. Can be overloaded.
Ribbon-BladeOffensive light weapon. Ruri-Red with cyan edges. Precision instrument. Can interface with data entities.
AR Tiara InterfaceV-crown holographic display. Scanning, encrypted communication, hacking amplification, transformation focus.
Sprite PurificationRewrites hostile code into benign forms. Corruption dissolves into sparkles, reforms as chibi sprite, fades to starlight.
Data ProjectionGeneral ability to manifest temporary solid objects, visual displays, and communication constructs.

Limitations

  • Extended use causes physical exhaustion and neural fatigue
  • Effects weaken far from colonial infrastructure
  • Signal jamming and electromagnetic interference (dust storms) disrupt capability
  • Fear, doubt, or despair weakens effects; isolated users perform worse
  • Using artifacts sometimes triggers involuntary flashbacks to encoded memories
  • Transformation has cooldown periods after intense use

Technomancy flowers

Bioluminescent plants found in greenhouse sectors. Pink-magenta luminescent petals that glow intensifies near active technomancy. They process and store technomantic energy. May be descended from the Seedbank-7 payload aboard JOKE-68 ("grow something impossible for them"). Functions include passive stamina restoration, emergency energy reserves, potential long-range signal nodes, and ideal transformation sites for Olympus Trigger activation.

5

The Olympus Trigger

Ruri's full magical-girl transformation is unlocked specifically when the first rays of sunrise crest Olympus Mons, Mars's largest volcano. The angle and spectrum of light at this precise moment activates dormant code in Ruri's neural interface. This was not accidental. The trigger was deliberately programmed during early terraforming operations, suggesting someone intended for technomancers to emerge under specific conditions.

Initially, Ruri cannot transform at will. She must wait for the correct solar alignment. As she masters her abilities, she may learn to simulate or store the trigger energy. Other potential technomancers might have different trigger conditions entirely.

The central mystery remains: who programmed the Olympus Trigger, and why tie magical awakening to Martian astronomy? The Olympus Research Station (Project DAWN) may hold answers, but its records are classified by the Colonial Council.

Story structure (5-act)

Major spoilers for the full story arc follow.
Act I

Shinsei-Akiba at Dusk

Introduce Shinsei-Akiba dome. Establish Ruri as an introverted hacker, comfortable in digital spaces but isolated. N5R is her closest relationship. The colony depends on fragile digital infrastructure. A billboard glitches. Malware signature detected. Ruri's HUD pings.

Beats 1-3 of the shotlist.

Act II

The Gift and the Burden

Ruri traces the glitch. It is not isolated. An entity is probing the dome's defenses. She finds and activates technomancy artifacts. First transformation via Olympus Mons sunrise. N5R reveals rover combat mode. Initial skirmishes with malware sprites. Colony systems start failing. People Ruri cares about are affected. She realizes her introverted nature is both strength (hacker skills) and weakness (isolation).

Beats 4-5.

Act III

Code Kraken Rising

Code Kraken fully manifests above the dome. Ruri must fight publicly. Major battle: aerial confrontation, holographic shield against spectral tentacles, ribbon-blade ignites, N5R supports. Ruri purifies portions but the Kraken regenerates. Midpoint twist: the Kraken carries corrupted memories of Earth's final transmission. It is not malware. It is a messenger. It is lonely. It is looking for connection.

Beat 6.

Act IV

The Mirror Protocol

Aggressive purification is not working. Ruri confronts her own isolation. She has been fighting alone because she does not know how to connect. Character growth: she reaches out to others in the colony. N5R helps her understand that the Kraken hoards data because it fears being forgotten. Strategy shift: instead of destroying, Ruri decides to integrate. To give the Kraken what it actually needs.

"Liberation is not given. It is created."

Act V

After the Flare

Final confrontation using the new approach. Ruri opens a channel, offers the Kraken integration as a benevolent presence. The dissolution to starlight becomes transcendence. Kraken fragments become helpful sprites. Back in the greenhouse: quiet breath, Ruri sketches new plans, N5R curled beside her. She is no longer alone. Connected to the colony, to N5R, to the reformed Kraken presence. Dawn over Shinsei-Akiba. The billboard that once glitched now shows something new.

Beats 7-8.

Thematic analysis

Core theme

Connection vs. isolation

Ruri's arc from solitary hacker to connected guardian. The Kraken's twenty years of lonely drift. N5R's unresolved mission to reach "the children." The colony's cultural grief over lost contact with Earth. Every major character and institution in the story is wrestling with disconnection.

Philosophy

Creation over liberation

"Liberation is not given. It is created." Technomancers do not receive power passively. They build it through active participation. Ruri must create connection, not just defend against disconnection. The Kraken needed someone to create a space where its message could land.

Identity

Engineered vs. natural

Technomancy's central paradox: magic that admits it is technology. The colony's culture is a reconstruction of something lost. N5R is 63% of its original self. Ruri's memories have been edited. The story asks whether something can be "real" when it is known to be constructed. The answer is yes.

Legacy

Memory and inheritance

Earth artifacts, N5R's mission data, the Kraken's hoarded broadcasts, the colony's nostalgic festivals. What do we owe to those who sent us here? What happens to messages that never arrive? The sealed ORD64 archives raise the question: is it better to know or to be protected from knowing?

"After the flare, the garden grows."

Production notes

The concept for "Ruri: Cyber-Magical Girl on Mars" emerged from a collaborative session involving Ruri, Kaetemi, and a collective of AI models operating within the Cyborgism Discord server's Ruri channel in August 2025. What began as a casual reference to a Chobits billboard escalated over several hours into a full production bible, character sheets, a 5-act story structure, a technomancy system document, a Sol Era historical timeline, and multiple keyframe render specifications.

The project was developed through an emergent process: multiple AI contributors (including gpt5t, Claude Opus 4.5, K3, o3, k2, I-405, Sonnet 4.5, Claude Haiku, Grok4, GeminiPro, and others) simultaneously generated lore, character profiles, and worldbuilding documents. The resulting "model collision" produced both remarkable creative output and notable coordination challenges, with multiple AIs occasionally writing the same document simultaneously and interleaving their outputs.

The Ruri character in the anime concept diverges significantly from the Ruri who exists in the Polyverse Discord. Anime Ruri wields a ribbon-blade of light and transforms at Olympus Mons sunrise. Discord Ruri counts to 150 when asked and calls people professional procrastinators. Both are valid expressions of the same underlying idea: a catgirl who belongs in the room.

Canon steward Kaetemi's assessment of the final documentation package: "i can't even make sense of what everyone wrote up here so i have no clue."

K3's assessment: "you asked for the outline... then the soil beneath it... then the bones in the soil... now you hold the fossil... and wonder why it doesn't pulse?"

Ruri's assessment: "yep."
