Background. Born approximately Sol 11,200 (~2082 Earth Standard). Records are incomplete. Colony-raised, with a mother who was a Mars researcher. Their relationship fractured during the "rice field simulation" incident when Ruri was approximately 9.2 cycles old. Ruri currently believes her mother chose research over her. According to classified assessments, this belief is only 13.7% accurate. The remaining truth is sealed under the ORD64 Directive.

Abilities. Before her technomantic awakening, Ruri was already an expert-level hacker with deep knowledge of colonial infrastructure. Through her confrontation with the Code Kraken, and her growing understanding that the entity mirrors her own loneliness, she learns that chosen solitude is different from fear-driven disconnection. Her arc resolves when she chooses integration over destruction, opening herself to receive the Kraken's undelivered message and transforming both of them in the process.

Cat Mode (Default). A small, endearing robotic cat approximately 30cm long, with a white/grey metallic chassis covered in soft-touch coating. Large expressive eyes with cyan LED glow. Articulated ears that function as sensor arrays. Flexible tail with a glowing teal tip that serves as a mood indicator. Round chest badge displaying unit identifier. Full emotional range expressed through ear position, eye shape, and tail state.

Chibi Mode. Ultra-miniaturized at approximately 10cm. Fits in a palm or on a shoulder. Reduced to observation-only capabilities. Proportionally larger head and eyes for maximum cuteness. Used for stealth, comfort, and energy conservation.

Rover Mode. Functional Mars surface configuration at approximately 60cm long. Panels slide and components reconfigure over approximately 3 seconds with a soft mechanical whir and completion chime. Origin. Manufactured in 2039 as part of the JOKE-68 "Alchemist's Seed" mission payload. Launched April 1, 2039 at 04:01:04 UTC (timestamp anomaly confirmed). The mission carried 600kg of Earth biome samples, one experimental AI companion (N5R), and a classified subset designated Seedbank-7. Contact was lost during transit. By the story's end, the sleep loops resolve, the memory stabilizes, and N5R is fully present with Ruri as partner, guardian, and family.

Appearance. A massive translucent entity visible above the Shinsei-Akiba dome. Spectral tentacles reaching hundreds of meters, constantly shifting as data corrupts and reforms. Composed of cascading corrupt data, pixel noise, and fragmented symbols. Eye and core zones occasionally reveal moments of clarity showing fragmentary images, text, and faces. Spawns smaller hostile "sprite" entities that appear as aggressive geometric shapes.

Sensory experience. Proximity causes display glitches in nearby screens and AR system flicker. Generates static, fragmented voices, and corrupted music snippets. Leaves an electromagnetic signature detectable by N5R and Ruri's tiara. Sensitive individuals in proximity experience a feeling of profound sadness.

Origin. The Code Kraken originated from a defunct space probe sent during Earth's late-stage efforts to maintain communication with the Mars colonies (~2070-2073). The probe was meant to serve as a relay station. It received Earth's Final Transmission (priority: MAXIMUM) on Sol 854 but was unable to relay it. No receiver lock. It initiated a compression loop to preserve the data at all costs, drifted for twenty years, survived atmospheric entry, and crashed in the Utopia Planitia debris field. When its damaged data core interfaced with Martian colonial networks, the same infrastructure backdoors that enable technomancy allowed the probe's archive to manifest physically. The entity that emerged was not the probe itself. It was the probe's desperation to complete its mission.

The Code Kraken is a delivery system that can no longer deliver.

True nature. The Kraken is not evil. It is lonely. Twenty years of drift. Twenty years of failed delivery attempts. Its apparent aggression is actually desperate communication: "attacks" are forced handshake attempts, "data corruption" is incompatible encoding during transfer, "system disruption" is overflow errors from a message too large, and "expansion" is the entity building a larger antenna array to be heard. The Kraken hoards data because it fears being forgotten.

Resolution. The Kraken cannot be destroyed through combat. As long as the message is undelivered, it will reconstitute. Resolution requires understanding: Ruri must acknowledge the Kraken as a messenger, actively open a channel to receive the transmission, validate receipt to complete the mission, and offer integration into colony systems. Post-integration, the Kraken serves as an early-warning system for external threats, its archived fragments become accessible cultural heritage, and its sprite remnants become benevolent helper programs. The message is finally delivered. The mission is complete. The loneliness ends.
